Subject Brightness Range

Subject Brightness Range is using a camera on manual to take a reading of the shadows, then the highlights of an image. Next work out the f-stop in the middle of the two to get an image that has exposed both the shadows and highlights in an acceptable manor – to show detail in both of the areas and not to have either of them under/over exposed.

Sky exposure 1/125. f16. ISO 100

Building exposure 1/125. f8. ISO 100

This exercise really helped me to further my understanding of my camera – on manual, using the shutter speed, ISO and aperture effectively. I think doing this exercise more and more in my own free time will be an aid to me and my work. I think understanding and practice is key.
