Canon 5D mk iii
I photographed a couple called Jess & Josh. They have been going out for 1 year and 3 months roughly. I would describe their relationship as ‘loves young dream’ as they are so sweet with each other and are still growing in their relationship. Jess is 22, almost 23 years old and Josh is 24, almost 25 years old. I photographed them in Jess’/her parents living room as it’s one of the places they hang out quite a lot. The aim was for them to feel comfortable in the environment and for it to relate to them and the time they spend together. I photographed them sat together on the couch. I went with the approach of asking them questions about their relationship and photographing their responses – towards me, towards each other and their own thought processes, mannerisms & body language. I also wanted to photograph possessions as a symbol of relationship – so Jess was wearing a necklace Josh had bought her and Josh was wearing a bracelet Jess had bought him. I also focused in on the holding of hands as a symbol.
I chose to photograph using the natural light coming in from behind them as I liked the aesthetic this produced as it is used in films as quite a romantic lighting.
The questions I asked in this session:
- How did you meet?
- How long have you been together?
- Josh, what’s your favourite thing about Jess?
- Jess, what’s your favourite thing about Josh?
- Do you each have a favourite memory together? – Jess, Josh
I felt that this shoot went well and I got some great natural responses and I observed a lot about each of their behaviour, as individuals and together. I noticed as I asked the questions a lot of different emotions were displayed and expressed in different ways. Through facial expression, body language, tone of voice, actions, looks, nervous laughter but also hearty laughter and other sounds made by each of them. At the end of the shoot however they both told me they really enjoyed the experience and felt completely comfortable.
